Consul (20 minutes west from the Holiday House)

Consul has the rare distinction of being the only surviving town in the Rural Municipality of Reno. It is a vibrant centre providing a great school (K-12), ice rink and curling rink, large community centre, seniors' centre, two churches, library, baseball diamond, grocery and hardware stores, a privately owned grain elevator, a hair salon, post office, car wash, one hotel with restaurant and bar and a motel with high speed internet. As well, there are several businesses servicing the ranch and petroleum industries.

There are about 500 people in the RM of Reno who make this a very caring community. Stop at the café or corner gas station, visit with the people and find out for yourself why this is a great place to visit or live.
Consul boasts 7 murals. Now while, technically, two are signs greeting you into town, a lot of planning and hard work went into the 4' x8' paintings by the grade 5/6 class of 2004/5. As an artist, I count them as murals.
The best known mural, the Corner Gas Mural, was painted in 1996 by Lindsay Clark. The first stage of refurbishment was completed in the fall of 2006. Fundraising is ongoing for stage two (donations can be sent to the Village of Consul).
"The Rink" Mural was painted in 2005 as a Centennial Project by Grant McLaughlin. It captures the essence of the typical prairie winter gathering place.
The oldest mural can only be seen by people of legal drinking age as it is in the bar. It was painted in 1957 by a travelling artist, Mr Flexhaug. It will be 50 years old in 2007.
Two murals are on the Co-op grocery store second floor window spaces. Two Consul students who won the "design a window" contest in June 2005, had their entries painted by Nancy-Jean Taylor in August 2005.
