The first drawing art retreat was held the week
20 -25 June 05. Katherine Ylitalo from Calgary, Alberta was
the on-site instructor.
Katherine Ylitalo came to Cypress Hills Grasslands Art Centre from Calgary with
over thirty years experience as a curator, writer, teacher and artist. She
received her B.A. (1972) and M.A. (1973) degrees from Stanford University. She
began teaching in Canada at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, and has
subsequently taught at the Nova Scotia Collecge of Art and Design, the
University of Regina, the University of Calgary and the Alberta College of Art
and Design.
She has worked as a curator, guest curator and writer for many
institutions including the Glenbow Museum, the Nickle Arts Museum, the Art
Gallery of Peterborough and the MacKenzie Gallery. Currently, she works with
the Civic Art Collection of the City of Calgary.
In the last few years she has
blended her interest in horticulture with the history of gardens through art in
lively talks which she has given at the the Calgary Zoo, the UBC Botanical
Gardens and the MacKenzie Gallery. She will be speaking at the Mendel Gallery
in conjunction with the international conference of Master Gardeners in July and
at the Art Gallery of Victoria in March, 2006.
Recently, she has been teaching
a series of drawing courses at the Calgary Zoo where students have an
excellent opportunity to draw from observation.
Katherine enjoyed returning to Saskatchewan (where she lived from 1979-86) and spent an intense
and wonderful week of drawing on site on the prairies.
